Day 1 : CHORA, CAPITAL OF KYTHERA ISLAND
Your arrival day
Installation at your hotel and free discovery of the city of Chora.
Kithira or Chora, the capital of the island is built on a hill above the sea, it is a model of Venetian defensive architecture. Its narrow streets and fortified mansions were designed to protect against pirate raids. The city is dominated by the Venetian castle (1503) which offers a spectacular view of the sea of Crete.
The archaeological museum contains an important collection of Minoan vases, Mycenaean pottery and finds from the archaic and classical periods.
2 km south-east of Chora, Kapsali is the main tourist center of the island and is a charming twin port bordered by beaches such as Yialos, Sparangarlo or Kapsalaki.
The small church of Agia Sofia is located at the entrance of the village of Kalamos. Late Neolithic pottery from the late Neolithic period (6th millennium BC) was found in the cave just behind the church.
The village of Livadi is 4 kilometers from Hora on the main road between the capital and Kapsali. Here you can see the beautiful old church of Ayios Andreas with its 12th century frescoes. The monasteries of Agia Elesa (4 km to the southwest) and Panayia Myrtidiotissa (7 km to the west) which have a beautiful sea view are also interesting here.
In Livadi, there is the Byzantine museum housed in the post-Byzantine church of Analipsi. This museum offers a beautiful and rare collection of fragile paintings and frescoes from other churches, saved by the Greek Department of Archaeology. There are also parts of an important early Christian mosaic, collected in the ruins of the church of Agios Ioannis Potamos.
Church of Analipsi, this beautiful church of Livadi is dedicated to the Ascension of Christ. It houses a collection of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art.
This small island south of Kythera has only 50 permanent inhabitants. Accessible by boat from Kythera, Potamos is the largest village but at the same time the port. The island has very few facilities.
One of the most beautiful medieval villages of Kithira with exemplary traditional architecture is Mylopotamos. Among the sites to see here are the miniature Venetian castle, the monastery of "la Panayia tis Orfanis", the Fonissa waterfall ideal for a swim and the cave dedicated to Ayia Sophia.
Lykodimou is a picturesque cove with a beautiful sandy beach. It is quite secluded and offers a nice place to enjoy some privacy.
The monastery of Agia Moni is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was built in 1840, on the top of a very high mountain and offers an incredible view of the port of Diakofti. The monastery is celebrated on August 6th. The long sandy beach is ideal for families and people who want to relax.
In Avlemonas, the castle was built by the Venetians in the 16th century to protect the island from enemies and attacks. It is located at the entrance to the port of Avlemonas and the Lion of Saint Mark, symbol of Venice, is engraved on it. Avlemonas has small coves with pure water for swimming. Paleohora Castle is one of the most important archaeological sites and was the Byzantine capital of the island. It was built by the Monemvasians in the 12th century. Chalkos is one of the most beautiful secluded beaches of the island with pebble and sand parts and surrounded by wild beauty. Kaladi is a small beach near Avlemonas, it is not very crowded, so it is an ideal place to relax but is reserved for those who like to take it easy.
Potamos (19 km. from Hora), the largest village on the island but also the main market of Kithira. There is a Byzantine church here dedicated to Saints Theodore and the churches of Ayios loannis, Ayia Anastasia and the Savior (Sotiros) which are worth a visit for their beautiful icons and frescoes. Agia Pelagia is one of the two main ports of the island, it is located on its north coast 28 kilometers from Hora. Agia Pelagia is one of the few organized beaches in Kythera. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery and becomes popular in summer.
Karavas: a typical isolated village 26 km north of Hora
The Moudari lighthouse is located at the northernmost point of the island, Cape Spathi. It was built under British rule and is the largest lighthouse built by the British in Greece. It was built in 1857.
The Beach of Agios Nikolaos, this small beach took its name from a small chapel on the shore, it is located near Agia Pelagia.
Breakfast and transfer to the airport
A complete Roadbook Travel will be given to you before departure, including a roadbook to print out with a detailed map of the island, suggestions for visits, a list of accommodations and vouchers. As there is no guide for this trip, the paper roadbook offers you discoveries, it is useful for "anticipatory" reading to prepare your next day's stopover. It allows you to get an overall idea of the itinerary and to identify the different possible variants: detours to particular points of interest (monasteries, viewpoints, beaches or creeks, etc) which often lengthen the itinerary, or on the contrary, identify possible shortcuts.
Your stay lends itself to swimming, either during the stage or at the end of the day. It would be a shame not to take advantage of it. However, we would like to emphasize that you are the sole judge of whether or not you are ready to swim; you are therefore responsible for your own safety.
