TWO-DAY AEGINA ISLAND TOUR FROM ATHENS
Just 40 minutes by hydrofoil catamaran from the port of Piraeus, Aegina is one of the closest islands to visit from Athens.

Aegina is also a great place for tourism, as the island's long history is reflected in its ancient monuments.
Arriving on the island, visitors are greeted by the church of Agios Nikolaos on the harbor, while neoclassical seaside houses create a charming atmosphere. The waterfront is lined with fish taverns, restaurants, souvenir shops and small kiosks selling pistachios, a popular local delicacy. Although the waterfront is usually bustling, the town is rather calm and unspoilt, surrounded by low hills and blue sea. Near the ferry dock at the port, horse-drawn carriages wait for rides around the city.

By the 5th century BC, Aegina became a major naval power and a serious threat to Athens, the most powerful city-state at the time. Culture flourished in Aegina along with the economy and many temples were built. Among them is the temple of Apollo near the modern port, of which unfortunately only one column remains today. This temple is known as Kolona and is accessible on foot from the port.
However, the most famous and interesting ancient monument of Aegina is the temple of Athena Aphaea, located in the center of the island. It was one of the most important religious centers of ancient Greece. Several centuries later, in 1829, Aegina became the first capital of the modern Greek state before Athens. Besides Aegina Town, the rest of the island also has beautiful seaside villages that have gradually transformed into tourist resorts. Souvala and Agia Marina are the most popular resorts with beautiful and clean beaches.
Marathonas and Perdika are much quieter places. Other sites to visit on Aegina are the Monastery of Agios Nektarios, the patron saint of the island, and the Hellenic Wildlife Hospital, a rehabilitation center for wild birds.
